Taylor Swift has written about her mom, Andrea, in more than one song. They have a close relationship, with Swift once saying that she checked in with her mother before making any decision. Still, they had their disagreements. She once shared one of the things they argued about most frequently.
Taylor Swift said she only really argued with her mom about one thing
Swift was a working artist by the time she was a teenager. She and her family spent a good deal of time on tour buses, where she said some difficulties arose.
“This is going to sound horrible but the only real argument that I have with my mom is, the temperature on the tour bus,” she said in a Q&A for GAC. “She likes it freezing, and I don’t. I like the bus really, really hot. So usually, she’ll turn the bus temperature all the way down to 65, and be like, ‘Taylor! You’ve got to stop turning it up!’ and then I’ll be like, ‘Okay Mom.’ When she turns around to walk away I’ll turn it back to 80. Then she’ll come back and be like, ‘Taylor!’”
She said she was lucky that this was the only thing she and her mother ever fought about.
“So those are the only real arguments that we get in,” she said. “My mom and I really get along and my dad and I get along really well so it’s gotten to the point where all we argue about is stupid stuff.”
She said she checked in with her mother about everything
Swift said that she always took her mother’s opinion into consideration before making a decision.
“My parents have instilled a great level of trust in me and I think that’s a huge, huge part of who I am,” she said. “I can tell my mom everything, and I do. Before I make decisions, I always think, ‘What is my mom going to think if I tell her this? Is my mom going to be really upset if she finds out that I did this?’ Usually I decide, ‘No, I’m not going to go through with this.’”
She believed this made her more mature.
“That’s the decision-making thing I always go through,” she said, adding, “I’ve had to make a lot of decisions. I think people kinda underestimate all the decisions every teenager has to make and how many life-changing choices they’re faced with every day. It’s all how you handle them, and how you handle yourself. I’ve always been really privileged to have something I could hold onto in the back of my mind.”
Taylor Swift’s mom spoke about supporting her career
Swift’s mother has been one of her biggest supporters. Her mother took her to Nashville so she could seek out a record deal.
“I took my demo CDs of karaoke songs, where I sound like a chipmunk — it’s pretty awesome — and my mom waited in the car with my little brother while I knocked on doors up and down Music Row,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I would say, ‘Hi, I’m Taylor. I’m 11; I want a record deal. Call me.’”
The family ultimately moved to Nashville to support her music career. Andrea took care with how she framed the move to avoid putting too much pressure on her daughter.
“I never wanted to make that move about her ‘making it,’” she said. “Because what a horrible thing if it hadn’t happened, for her to carry that kind of guilt or pressure around. And we moved far enough outside Nashville to where she didn’t have to be going to school with producers’ kids and label presidents’ kids and be reminded constantly that she was struggling to make it. We’ve always told her that this is not about putting food on our table or making our dreams come true.”
