Police said they first received reports of a blaze on the top level of the hotel on Surfers Paradise Boulevard at about 1.55am.

The fire was extinguished less than an hour later at about 2.40am.

Occupants have been allowed to return to the building.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
