The Bureau of Meteorology says a cyclone warning is now in place, as of just before 5am AEST today, from Double Island Point in Queensland to Grafton in NSW.

This includes Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Byron Bay, and Ballina – but not Grafton itself.

A cyclone watch is in place from Sandy Cape on K’gari to Double Island Point.

A warning zone indicates that gale force winds are expected in the next 24 hours, while a watch zone is where gale force winds might take place in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Alfred remains at a category two level, with sustained winds of 95km/hr near the centre and gusts of up to 130km/hr.

It’s about 465km east of Brisbane and is moving west at 11km/hr – almost twice as fast as it was travelling south yesterday.
