Parts of a Gold Coast beach have been plunged into lockdown after a suspicious device washed up this morning.

Police were called to the scene and have established a 100-metre exclusion zone at the Spit near Main Beach.

The device appears to resemble a torpedo, but has not been formally identified.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the “suspicious device” was discovered about 5.45am.

Police are urging members of the public to avoid the area.

The Spit is at the northern tip of Main Beach, up the road from Sea World.
