The search for Yowie Bay grandfather Paul Barning, who was pulled overboard while reeling in a shark near Port Stephens, has been suspended.

Police spent the day conducting air and sea patrols from Sydney down to Jervis Bay in the search for the 58-year-old.

Emergency services were told Barning had fallen overboard during a fishing competition at about 1pm on Sunday.

Crews from the NSW Police Force Marine Area Command, PolAir, Marine Rescue NSW, and Westpac Rescue Helicopter joined the search about 55km off the Newcastle coast.

The search for the 58-year-old man continued during daylight hours yesterday and today.

Despite the efforts of searchers, Barning has not yet been located.

The search was suspended at 5pm today and will not resume tomorrow.
