Kidnapped, Robbed and Murdered: Uber Driver’s Assailant Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder

A Pennsylvania man was found guilty Monday, in connection with the death of an Uber driver.

Calvin Crew, 25, was found guilty of first-degree murder, a conviction that carries a mandatory life sentence, according to the Pittsburgh Gazette. The jury’s decision followed four days of testimony and five hours of deliberation over two days.

In addition to the murder charge, Crew was convicted of robbery causing serious bodily injury, robbery of a motor vehicle, kidnapping to facilitate a felony, carrying a firearm without a license, and tampering with evidence.

As CrimeOnline previously reported, the incident occurred on February 11, 2022, when Crew entered 38-year-old Uber driver Christi Spicuzza’s vehicle and, 18 minutes into the ride, pointed a gun at her. Dashcam footage captured Crew pulling the victim’s ponytail and turning off the dashcam, though the initial confrontation had already been recorded.

Spicuzzi tried to reason with him and pled to his humanity, said Detective Laurie McKeel, with Allegheny County Homicide.

Despite Spicuzza telling Crew she had a family, he ordered her to continue driving, saying he had a family too. Nearly 24 hours later, authorities found her body in a wooded area in Monroeville. She had been shot in the back of the head.

Crew was arrested shortly afterward and charged with criminal homicide, robbery, and evidence tampering.

His formal sentencing is scheduled for May 5, according to the Pittsburgh Gazette.
