Orphaned Children’s Estate Lawyer Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Over $540,000

A lawyer serving as the executor of orphaned children’s estate has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $540,000 from their funds.

Karen Kay Hogan, 67, was taken into custody and booked into the Kendall County Jail in Boerne, Texas, on the morning of January 30. She is accused of misappropriating funds intended for six children who lost their parents in a murder-suicide in 2021.

On December 31, 2021, Jason Evans, 47, shot his wife, Emily Fulton Evans, before taking his own life at their home on the 100 block of Ridge Place in Boerne. They left behind six children, including five daughters and one son, according to the Boerne Star.

In November 2022, Hogan was appointed as the temporary administrator of the Evans estate and later became the dependent administrator, as reported by KSAT.

In 2023, Hogan began transferring funds from savings accounts set up in the parents’ names, where she listed herself as the joint account owner, into her business account. From there, transfers were made to an unknown account.

According to the affidavit, between August 2023 and February 2024, Hogan misapplied $541,550 from the estate.

Hogan has surrendered her law license, as indicated by Texas State Bar records. She is facing felony charges of misapplication of fiduciary property of $300,000 or more, exploitation of children, and exploitation of a disabled individual.
